Why it works

The bonus is real money — paid by Uber, on top of your fares.

Uber regularly runs a "guaranteed earnings" program for new driver-partners in Sydney. Here's how it works: complete a set number of trips within the bonus window, and Uber guarantees you'll earn at least the bonus amount in total. If your fares come in below that, Uber pays the difference. If they come in above, you keep all of it.

You can't lose. Worst case, you earn the guarantee from a mix of fares + the Uber top-up. Best case, your fares cover it and the bonus is pure bonus. Tips are separate — those stay yours, always.

How to start

3 steps. About two weeks. Then you're driving.

No interview, no resume, no manager. The application is online and the paperwork is light — most of the wait is just the background check clearing.

1

Apply online with my code

Click any button on this page. The link locks in my code e27b4vv automatically — that's what unlocks your A$1,000 guarantee.

⏱ 10 minutes
2

Upload docs & get your PTLC

Passport, full Australian licence, vehicle rego & insurance. Then visit any Service NSW centre to apply for your Passenger Transport Licence Code (A$22).

Background check clears

Uber runs the national police check through NCC. Usually clears within 5–14 days. Once approved, download the app, tap "Go", and start earning.

Real earnings

What I actually make.

Honest numbers from my own driving. Sydney rideshare earnings depend on three things: hours, peak vs off-peak timing, and how well you read the surge map. Below is a mix from my own week-to-week.

Friday night · Surry Hills
Peak hour rate
A$60–80/hr
Friday/Saturday nights when surge kicks in. CBD, Surry Hills, Bondi — anywhere people are going out.
Best single shift
A$680 in 9hrs
Best Saturday night last month — surge stayed strong from 7pm to 2am.
Top weeks
Up to A$2,000
Full-time, hitting Friday + Saturday peaks every week, plus weeknights.
First-month total
A$5,000+
Your fares from the first 30 trips, plus the A$1,000 sign-up bonus on top.

The bonus changes the maths.

In your first month, whatever you earn from fares gets the A$1,000 sign-up guarantee on top. That's like getting an extra week's pay just for getting started. It's why most new drivers I know prioritise hitting 30 trips fast.

What you need

The whole list — nothing hidden.

Don't get scared by other websites making this sound complicated. To start driving Uber in Sydney, you only need these six things — most of which you probably already have.

Be 21 or older

Minimum age for Uber rideshare in Australia. (Not 18 — that's for food delivery only.)

Full Australian licence, held 1+ year

In any state. No learner permits and no P-plates — must be a full, unrestricted licence.

A qualifying car — or rent one

4-door, ANCAP 5-star rated, no older than 15 years. No car? Splend, Umi Go and Hertz all rent Uber-ready vehicles weekly.

PTLC at Service NSW

Passenger Transport Licence Code, added to your driver's licence. A$22 fee, processed in 3–7 days. Walk in with your licence and passport.

An ABN + GST registration

Both free and instant through the ATO online. NSW rideshare drivers register for GST from day one.

Pass a national police check

About A$58, runs through NCC. Usually clears in under two weeks if you have nothing flagged.

Limited time

You could be applied by tonight.

From experience

3 things I learned the hard way.

These are the basics that took me three months to figure out. Read them now and you'll skip the learning curve.

Rainy Friday · the most profitable hours
1

Only drive when the city's going out.

Morning rush gets you sober, polite, base-rate trips. Friday 7pm onwards is where the money is — people going out, coming home, and tipping. Same for Saturday night.

2

Rain is a green light.

Order volume spikes the second it starts pouring, surge stacks, and people who'd otherwise walk all want Ubers. Rainy Friday nights are routinely my highest-earning hours of the month.

3

Chase the surge map, not the trips.

The driver app shows a live surge heatmap. Position inside the red zones before requests come in. The drivers making A$30/hr are sitting still. The ones making A$80/hr are moving toward demand.

Questions

Stuff people always ask me.

The questions every new Sydney rideshare driver asks before they sign up. If something here doesn't match what you see in the Uber sign-up flow, trust the sign-up flow — current details always live there.

How does the A$1,000 sign-up bonus actually work?+
It's what Uber calls "guaranteed earnings." Complete 30 trips within your sign-up window, and Uber guarantees you'll earn at least A$1,000 total. If your fares come in below A$1,000, Uber pays the difference. If they come in above, you keep it all. Either way, you can't lose. Tips are separate and stay yours.
Is the A$60–80/hour on weekends real or marketing?+
It's real, but it's peak surge nights — Friday/Saturday evenings, rainy nights, big events. The base UberX rate alone won't get you there. What gets you there is surge multipliers (often 1.5×–2.5× during demand peaks) stacked with steady ride flow. Quiet Tuesday afternoon? Closer to A$25/hr. The trick is only working the windows where the math works.
How long until I'm actually earning?+
If you do everything in parallel — application, PTLC, background check, ABN — you're looking at about 10 to 14 days. The slowest piece is the police check (up to 14 days). The PTLC is 3–7 business days. The ABN is instant. Do them all on day one; don't space them out.
What if I don't have a car?+
You can rent one weekly. Splend, Umi Go and Hertz all offer Uber-ready cars in Sydney. Weekly payments, no deposit, no credit check on most. They bundle in insurance, servicing and rego. I rented from Splend for six months before buying my own car. Lowest-risk way to try the gig.
Can I do this around a full-time job?+
That's exactly how I started — weekends and Friday nights only. I cleared an extra A$400–700 most weekends with zero impact on my Monday-to-Friday job. You set your own hours in the app — log on when you want, log off when you don't.
Why share your code at all?+
When a new driver signs up with my code and starts driving, Uber pays me a small thank-you bonus on their side. It doesn't come out of your earnings or your A$1,000 guarantee — that's a separate payment from Uber. You get your full bonus, I get a coffee fund.
Is it really worth it?+
For me, yes. The flexibility is real, the surge nights pay well, and the first-month bonus genuinely covers your setup costs and then some. The first month is rough because you're learning. By month two or three you've got your rhythm. My honest advice: don't waste two months googling. Sign up and see.
Last thing

Stop reading. Start earning.

The application takes ten minutes. The bonus is waiting on the other side. The sooner you start, the sooner you're driving.
